DESCRIPTION:RTR member Spencer has worked with Lance at the Gamers Geekery & Tavern in Cary to pilot a new series of Casual Meets for the group. \nGeneral Overview\nRTR Casual Meets have a long and storied history as places where Triangle-area gamers can gather for casual conversation and fellowship. They’re a great place to both catch up with old friends and reminisce about great games that came before and to meet new and interesting people and even find players/GMs for future games! \nIn the future\, we might occasionally offer an optional RPG-related workshop or roundtable\, and it’s totally alright to bring a short boardgame or card game you’d like to play\, but the Casual Meet is primarily intended as an unstructured social gathering. \nThe host business has agreed to initially waive their headcount fees for our group as we pilot this new program with them. While there’s no requirement to do so\, it would be courteous to try to buy some food and drink while you’re there\, as the GG&T offers both! \nFeel free to bring a friend\, but please try to add a +1 to your RSVP here on Meetup if you do so; we try to provide the host with as accurate a number as we can ahead of time. \nSafety and Expectations\nAs a general rule\, always respect the rules and requirements of our host establishment\, as RTR is a guest in their business! \nCurrently\, GG&T doesn’t have a requirement for masking\, but they do follow all state mandates\, so please be aware of those before any events held here. \nWe ask that our members be considerate and stay home if they are feeling ill or have other illness concerns; there’s always next time. If you have allergies\, please consider wearing a mask; you may not be sick\, but a sneeze is a sneeze! The Event Host will generally try to have a box of disposable masks available as a second resort. \nIf you find out after attending any in-person RTR event that you’ve suffered a Covid exposure\, or test positive\, please inform the Organizers ASAP\, so that they can disseminate the potential risk information to others so they can test at their own discretion. If you knowingly bring an illness to an RTR event\, you will not be welcome at future gatherings. \nFeedback and Future Events\nSpencer will be collecting feedback after the Casual Meet\, and your thoughtful response is greatly appreciated. We’d like to see more events like this in the future\, but want to be inclusive of as many people’s time\, availability\, and interests as we can. We might alternate days future events are held\, try out different venues\, and even play with the format of the event itself.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Try-It-Out of The Silt Verses RPG\, a tabletop roleplaying game of folk horror and monstrous divinity\, in which a group of indebted Custodians are sent into isolated territories to deal with stray gods and terrifying divine manifestations which threaten the nearby community. The Custodians investigate these entities and the manifestation of their powers\, and will then seek methods to appease them\, neutralize them\, or otherwise engage the local community to find a solution. Our aim as players is the same\, but also to learn more about these characters’ fraught pasts and uncertain futures\, as well as to paint a vivid picture of our version of the Silt Verses setting\, a responsibility we all share. The aims for today’s session are to create and introduce our characters\, learn the basics of how the game works by playing it\, and then have a debrief period at the end. \nTone\nThe tone of The Silt Verses RPG is dark\, strange\, and unsettling. It presents a world where monstrous horrors are viewed as miraculous and divine\, and systemic cruelties as routinely accepted by society. It exaggerates difficult themes of our world by showing them as literal gods\, and this can verge on the absurd—but this is not intended to become a parody. A little bit of levity or humor from time to time is ok\, but we will always strive to return to that dark\, gloomy landscape the characters exist in. \nSubject Matter\nCosmic horror\, graphic violence\, ritual sacrifice\, intense body horror\, grotesque religious imagery\, cults\, religious trauma\, harm to children and animals\, family trauma\, government corruption and oppression\, police violence\, war\, and natural disasters are all things that may come up frequently in this game. We will use a number of safety tools to help manage these potentially difficult topics including: the X-card\, Lines & Veils\, and the Open Door Policy. Although many of these topics are part of what this game is designed to explore\, we can choose to omit them during our game. No game is more important than its players. That said\, it’s possible this isn’t a game you’d enjoy playing and that’s okay!

It’s when the lights go out and you feel something behind you\, you hear it\, you feel its breath against your ear\, but when you turn around\, there’s nothing there…\n― Stephen King \n\nThe Special Events Committee is excited to bring you back to the infamous Dark Carnival\, Raleigh Tabletop RPGs’ own horror-themed Special Event. The one-shot TTRPG sessions presented here by our incredible volunteer GMs run the gamut from Saturday Morning Cartoon Spookems to Psychological Dungeon Horror\, from Otherwordly Sci-Fi Frights to Extraordinary Fantastical Fears. \nDark Carnival 2023 will comprise two Sessions of games — the “morning” Session from 12noon – 4PM\, and then the “afternoon” Session from 5PM-9PM. Players are welcome to sign up for a game in each Session\, if they’d like. These Sessions will take place both IRL at Gamer’s Geekery & Tavern as well as virtually using a variety of tools but organized centrally via RTR’s Discord Server (check the Dark Carnival 2023 topic under the Campaigns list in the Tabletop section). \nDuring this event\, we will be selling entries in a Fundraiser Raffle to help support RTR. Throughout the year\, we need to spend money to maintain our Meetup account\, book spaces at venues (like the Tavern!)\, and fund other services (e.g.\, Roll20/Kanka/Obsidian Portal for our GMs\, printing rules for our public campaigns\, etc.).
