SUMMARY:Try-It-Out: The Silt Verses: A God Must Feed
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Try-It-Out of The Silt Verses RPG\, a tabletop roleplaying game of folk horror and monstrous divinity\, in which a group of indebted Custodians are sent into isolated territories to deal with stray gods and terrifying divine manifestations which threaten the nearby community. The Custodians investigate these entities and the manifestation of their powers\, and will then seek methods to appease them\, neutralize them\, or otherwise engage the local community to find a solution. The Custodians gradually become aware of a looming conspiracy that overshadows their work\, as a powerful organization seeks to take advantage of them to fulfill its secret agenda. The Custodians will ultimately decide how to confront this organization\, all the while struggling with their complicated relationship to faith and the gods of their past whose power threatens to consume them. \nThe Silt Verses RPG is based on the horror/weird-fiction podcast of the same name. The entire podcast is wonderful and worth listening to\, but in particular\, episode 3 and episode 7 are excellent\, stand-alone episodes that demonstrate both the world and the kinds of activities the Custodians might engage in. The game’s mechanics are based on Apocalypse World and Brindlewood Bay\, but you don’t need to know anything about those two games before we play. The Silt Verses RPG is a deeply collaborative game\, and players will often be asked for direct input into the fiction\, even outside of the sphere of their own characters. \nAim\nThe aim of the characters in the story is to pursue investigations surrounding these stray gods and powers\, and come to terms with their complicated past with a particular god\, deciding if they will continue on that path and be further changed by the power that god provides. Our aim as players is the same\, but also to learn more about these characters’ fraught pasts and uncertain futures\, as well as to paint a vivid picture of our version of the Silt Verses setting\, a responsibility we all share. The aims for today’s session are to create and introduce our characters\, learn the basics of how the game works by playing it\, and then have a debrief period at the end. \nTone\nThe tone of The Silt Verses RPG is dark\, strange\, and unsettling. It presents a world where monstrous horrors are viewed as miraculous and divine\, and systemic cruelties as routinely accepted by society. It exaggerates difficult themes of our world by showing them as literal gods\, and this can verge on the absurd—but this is not intended to become a parody. A little bit of levity or humor from time to time is ok\, but we will always strive to return to that dark\, gloomy landscape the characters exist in. \nSubject Matter\nCosmic horror\, graphic violence\, ritual sacrifice\, intense body horror\, grotesque religious imagery\, cults\, religious trauma\, harm to children and animals\, family trauma\, government corruption and oppression\, police violence\, war\, and natural disasters are all things that may come up frequently in this game. We will use a number of safety tools to help manage these potentially difficult topics including: the X-card\, Lines & Veils\, and the Open Door Policy. Although many of these topics are part of what this game is designed to explore\, we can choose to omit them during our game. No game is more important than its players. That said\, it’s possible this isn’t a game you’d enjoy playing and that’s okay!

SUMMARY:Try It Out: Old Gods of Appalachia
DESCRIPTION:Welcome\, family\, to a game and a place like no other. The Old Gods of Appalachia Roleplaying Game is set in an alternate Appalachia\, a place filled with creatures of the Green\, the Inner Dark\, and things even more ancient. It’s based on the Old Gods of Appalachia podcast\, a captivating eldritch horror anthology created by Steve Shell and Cam Collins. The game uses the Cypher system by Monte Cooke Games. \nPlayers will not need familiarity with the Cypher system or the Old Gods podcast\, though I strongly recommend the podcast. \n\nPre-generated Characters will be provided and yours to keep.\nThis game uses 1d20 and percental dice (usually 2d10\, with one die marked as the 10s digit). A d6 is also useful. Dice will be available for use.\nPlease bring a pencil or other favorite writing instrument and perhaps some spare paper for notes.\n\n\nBest Leave Them Ghosts Alone (GenCon exclusive intro module) \nGoing to the funeral of a childhood friend is never an easy thing\, but when it’s the funeral of someone you accidentally killed and then brought back to life years ago\, well…you all have your owes\, and this one’s about to come due. \nCW: Child Death; Grief; Funerals; Ghosts; Hauntings

SUMMARY:Try It Out: Brindlewood Bay
DESCRIPTION:A Game of Cozy Murder and Darkness\n\nBrindlewood Bay is a roleplaying game about a group of elderly women—members of the local Murder Mavens mystery book club—who frequently find themselves investigating (and solving!) real-life murder mysteries. They become increasingly aware that there are supernatural forces that connect the cases they are working on and\, in particular\, a cult dedicated to the dark\, monstrous aspect of the goddess Persephone will come to vex them. \nThe game is directly inspired by the television show Murder\, She Wrote\, but also takes inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft\, “cozy” crime dramas\, and American TV shows from the ‘70s\, ‘80s\, and ‘90s.

SUMMARY:Try It Out: Rivers of London (VTT)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Try-It-Out of Chaosium’s newest RPG\, Rivers of London. \nPregenerated characters will be provided. We will use a combination of Roll20 for visuals and dice rolling and Jitsi for video and audio. \nIn Rivers of London: the Roleplaying Game\, players take on the roles of newly recruited members of the London Metropolitan Police Service’s special magic branch\, aka “the Folly.” You will solve mysteries\, catch criminals\, and come to grips with the “demi-monde”—those who have been irreversibly changed by magic. \n\nThe Bookshop\n“Good morning\, everyone. Thank you for joining me. Earlier\, I received a telephone call from our colleagues at the Charing Cross Primary Crime Unit. There was an incident late last night at Stonewaters Bookshop on New Row that they believe will be of interest to us. One of the booksellers\, a Mr Warwick Anderson\, was assaulted at approximately 12:30 am while rearranging a display in the bookshop’s basement. Mr Anderson\, though somewhat concussed\, managed to telephone the emergency services. The call handler sent a response team to the bookshop\, where they had to force an entry in order to render assistance. \n“Our colleagues from Charing Cross carried out a search of the premises while Mr Anderson was being seen by the attending paramedics. They found no alarms tripped and no evidence of a break-in\, nor of anything having been stolen. However\, there were obvious signs of a disturbance in the basement matching the description given to them by the victim. \n“I would like you to interview Mr Anderson to establish his recollection of events. He is awaiting you at the Cappuccino Lounge\, also on New Row. Then\, I would like you to visit the bookshop and carry out an inspection\, including an Initial Vestigium Assessment\, to determine whether this is\, indeed\, a Falcon case. Ms Saffron Jackson\, the store’s manager\, will be on hand to escort you. The bookshop usually opens at 11:00 am on a Sunday\, and\, by all accounts\, Ms Jackson is keen to resume business at the earliest possible convenience. \n“Report back here to me once you have completed your initial inquiries. I await your findings with interest.”

SUMMARY:Try It Out: Death in Space
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Ring! Your crew has recently docked into the Aurum 80 station where trouble is brewing. Tensions keep rising between the two gangs as everyone fights for the last bit of water\, air\, fuel\, and drugs. Meanwhile your spacecraft needs expensive repairs\, and you have a large docking fee debt you need to repay. Even worse the sector ringleader is going be arriving with plenty of union muscle to sort things out himself in a few hours. With a lot of problems and not a lot of time\, will you and your crew survive another day at the end of the universe? \nDeath in Space is a rule lite d20 system taking place in a grim sci-fi future. The game should be very easy to learn if you have ever played a d20 system before. Excerpt from the book: \n“Civilization is at its end. Slowly but steadily\, the universe contracts towards an inescapable end. The void between the stars whispers strange and portentous phrases to the unlucky. This is a game about the hard-working explorers and laborers in this universe\, and the jobs they take to survive in a war-torn stellar system where anarchy spreads and resources are scarce. Without a good aim\, and a tech-savvy mind\, they will quickly meet their DEATH IN SPACE.” \nWarnings: Drug use and violence. Potentially other things like language and body horror\, but I will send out a survey to all players for topics to avoid\, so I won’t include anything people are uncomfortable with.
